Foot Reflexology & Su Jok Therapy

Two precise, map-based disciplines for guests who want more than relaxation: Thai-method reflexology worked entirely on the sole, and Su Jok — the Korean system that treats the whole body through the hands and feet.

The discipline

What reflexology actually is

Reflexology rests on a simple mapping idea: the sole of the foot is a chart of the body. Traditional reflexology charts place the head and neck reflexes in the toes, the chest and lungs in the ball of the foot, the digestive organs along the arch, and the lower back and pelvis in the heel. Working a point on the sole is held to stimulate — through the nervous system — the corresponding region of the body.

At Nuad Thai Massage Athens we practise the Thai Reflexology Method. Its defining rule is scope: the treatment is performed only on the sole, from the ankle down. The ankle joint and lower leg are never stretched or manipulated, which keeps every minute of your session on the reflex map itself. Tools are equally specific: the pads of the thumbs for most zones, and a smooth rounded wooden stick for points that need deeper, sustained pressure.

Your session, step by step

  1. 1

    Reading the feet

Your session begins with the therapist observing and palpating both soles. Skin tone, temperature and areas of hardness or puffiness are noted — in reflexology these are read as signals about which reflex zones need the most attention.

  2. 2

    Warming and opening

The sole is warmed with slow, broad thumb strokes from heel to toe. This increases circulation in the foot itself and prepares the reflex zones so the precise point work that follows is comfortable rather than startling.

  3. 3

    Systematic point work, ankle-down

Using the pads of the thumbs and — for deep or stubborn points — a smooth wooden reflexology stick, the therapist works the mapped zones of the sole in a fixed sequence: toes and the head/neck reflexes first, then the ball of the foot (chest and lungs), the arch (digestive organs) and finally the heel (pelvic and lower-back reflexes). In the Thai method all of this happens strictly below the ankle — the ankle joint and lower leg are never manipulated.

  4. 4

    Repeating on tender zones

Points that feel gritty, tight or noticeably tender to you receive a second, slower pass with sustained pressure. Tenderness at a reflex point is traditionally interpreted as congestion in the corresponding body zone, and patient repetition is how the Thai method addresses it.

  5. 5

    Closing strokes

The session ends with calming, sweeping strokes over the whole sole and a gentle stretch of the toes, settling the nervous system before you stand up.

What you may feel during and after

  • A brief, sharp-but-bearable tenderness when a congested reflex point is first pressed — it typically eases within seconds as the point is worked.
  • A spreading warmth or a pleasant heaviness in the feet during the session.
  • Referred sensations elsewhere — many guests notice warmth, tingling or a sense of release in the back, shoulders or head while only the sole is being touched.
  • Deep drowsiness: it is very common to drift into light sleep during a 60-minute session.
  • Afterwards, lighter-feeling legs, calmer breathing and, for many guests, a noticeably deeper sleep the same night.

Sensations vary from person to person and from session to session. None of the above is guaranteed, and none of it constitutes a medical claim.

Korean acupressure

Su Jok — the body, mapped onto hands and feet

Su Jok — from the Korean su (hand) and jok (foot) — is a therapy system developed in 1987 by the Korean scholar Professor Park Jae Woo. Its core observation is that the hand and foot are structurally similar to the whole body: the thumb and big toe correspond to the head, the fingers and toes to the limbs, and the palm and sole to the torso. Each hand and each foot is therefore treated as a complete miniature map — a "microsystem" — of the organism.

In practice this means a therapist can address a complaint without touching the painful area at all. For a stiff neck, the corresponding zone at the base of the thumb is located and stimulated; for lower-back discomfort, the zone along the inner arch of the foot or the back-line of the hand. Because the correspondence points are small, Su Jok uses fine, precise acupressure — with fingertips, a rounded probe, or small seeds taped to the point for continued stimulation after the session.

What the research says. Su Jok belongs to the wider family of acupressure and reflex therapies. Clinical studies on acupressure more broadly — including randomized trials and systematic reviews — report short-term reductions in pain intensity for conditions such as lower-back pain, neck pain, tension-type headache and menstrual pain, and reflexology studies report benefits for pain, anxiety and sleep quality. Many of our own guests tell us a Su Jok session eased pain in the back, neck, shoulders, hips or head. At the same time, the scientific evidence base is still limited: many studies are small, results vary between people, and Su Jok itself has been studied far less than acupuncture or classic acupressure. We present it honestly — as a complementary practice that many people find genuinely helpful, not as a proven medical treatment.

How a Su Jok session unfolds

  • A short consultation pinpoints the complaint — where it hurts, since when, and what aggravates it.
  • The therapist searches the corresponding Su Jok zones on your hands and/or feet for the most sensitive point.
  • Controlled acupressure is applied and repeated; most guests feel the referred area respond within minutes.
  • Where useful, tiny seeds are taped to key points so the stimulation continues for hours after you leave.

Who tends to choose Su Jok

Guests with a specific, localised complaint — a locked neck after a flight, an aching lower back, shoulder tension from desk work — and guests who want a drug-free, non-invasive complement to their existing care. Because Su Jok works only on the hands and feet, it is also an option when the painful area itself should not be touched.

A Su Jok session at Nuad Thai is a complete standalone appointment at €150.

Medical disclaimer

Reflexology and Su Jok are complementary wellness practices. They are not medical treatments, are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and are not a substitute for advice, diagnosis or care from a qualified physician. Never delay, discontinue or adjust medical treatment because of a wellness session. If you are pregnant (especially in the first trimester), have a heart condition, epilepsy, a pacemaker or other implant, blood-clotting issues, diabetes-related foot problems, open wounds, an active infection or a recent surgery, consult your doctor before booking and inform your therapist before the session begins. If you experience persistent or unexplained pain, seek medical advice.

Reflexology questions

How is reflexology different from a foot massage?

A foot massage works the muscles and soft tissue of the foot and calf to relax them. Reflexology is a point-based discipline: pressure is applied to mapped reflex zones of the sole — in our case strictly below the ankle, following the Thai method — with the intention of influencing corresponding organs and systems elsewhere in the body. The goal is different, the technique is different, and the training is different.

Does reflexology hurt?

Most of the session feels like firm, pleasant pressure. When the therapist finds a congested reflex point you may feel a short, sharp tenderness — guests often describe it as a 'good pain' that fades within seconds. You are always in control of the pressure: tell your therapist and they will adjust immediately.

Should I book 30 or 60 minutes?

Thirty minutes covers the main reflex map and works well as a focused reset or as an add-on to walking-heavy Athens days. Sixty minutes allows a complete, unhurried pass over every zone of both feet, including second passes on tender points, and is what we recommend for a first session.

What is Su Jok and when should I choose it?

Su Jok is a Korean acupressure system that treats the hands and feet as miniature maps of the whole body. Because the correspondence points are so small and precise, Su Jok can target pain in a specific area — a stiff neck, an aching lower back, a sore shoulder — without the therapist needing to touch that area at all. Choose Su Jok when you have a specific pain complaint; choose foot reflexology for whole-body balance and deep relaxation.

Can reflexology or Su Jok replace medical treatment?

No. Both are complementary wellness practices. They are not medical treatments, they do not diagnose, cure or prevent any disease, and they are not a substitute for care from a physician. If you have a diagnosed condition, persistent pain, are pregnant, or have recently had surgery, please consult your doctor first and tell us before your session.
